CutOutFree vs remove.bg: an honest comparison

Last updated October 17, 2026

Short answer

Both remove backgrounds automatically with AI. CutOutFree cuts out photos on your own device, so nothing is uploaded, and gives you the full-resolution picture for free, 10 a day without an account. remove.bg works on its servers, gives a small preview for free and charges a credit for each full-resolution download, but it handles bigger photos and offers an API. remove.bg is also moving into Canva, which has owned it since 2021.

Where CutOutFree is better

  • Privacy: your photo never leaves your device, so there is nothing to upload, store or delete.
  • The full-resolution download is free, with no credits to buy.
  • No account needed for 10 photos a day.

remove.bg is moving into Canva

remove.bg has announced that its background removal is moving into Canva, which bought it in 2021. News reports say the standalone remove.bg website closes on 1 December 2026. If you used remove.bg now and then to cut out a photo, CutOutFree does the same job in your browser, with the full-resolution download included. If you rely on its API for an app or a shop, check remove.bg’s own announcement for where that is going.

Which one should you use?

For everyday photos, especially private ones, and when you want the full picture without paying: CutOutFree. For huge photos, automated work through an API, or hand-retouching the edges: a server-based tool like remove.bg or its successor in Canva. The fairest test is your own hardest photo: try it in both.
