How to remove a background without uploading your photo

Last updated October 17, 2026

Short answer

Use a background remover that runs inside your browser, such as CutOutFree. The AI is downloaded to your phone or computer once, and every photo is cut out right there, so the photo itself never leaves your device. Most other online background removers upload your photo to their servers first.

How most background removers work

You pick a photo, it is uploaded to the company’s servers, their computers cut it out, and the result is sent back to you. Many of them say they delete photos after a while, and many do. But your photo has still left your device, and you have to take their word for what happens next.

How CutOutFree does it differently

The first time you use it, your browser downloads the AI from cutoutfree.com, 40 to 110 MB depending on your device, and keeps it for next time. From then on your own device does all the work. Our server only counts how many photos you have cut out today, for the free limit; it never receives the photo, the cutout or a background picture you add.

Check it yourself

You don’t have to trust us on this. On a computer, with Chrome or Edge:

  1. Open cutoutfree.com and press F12 (on a Mac, Cmd+Option+I) to open the developer tools, then click the Network tab.
  2. Choose a photo and wait for the cutout.
  3. Look at the list. The first time you will see the AI files being downloaded, and each time one small request that counts the image. Nothing the size of your photo is sent anywhere.

When it matters

  • ID cards, passport-style photos and documents.
  • Photos of your children or family.
  • Client work, unreleased products and anything under a confidentiality agreement.
  • Any photo you simply would rather keep to yourself.

What CutOutFree does keep

To allow 10 free photos a day without an account, the site keeps a counter: one cookie with a random number, and a scrambled form of your network address that changes every day. If you sign in, it keeps your name and email address. That is all; the details are in the privacy policy.

Questions

Is my photo stored anywhere?

Only in your own browser while the page is open. When you close the tab or choose a new photo, it is gone. CutOutFree never has a copy.

Why is the first photo slower?

Because your browser downloads the AI once, 40 to 110 MB depending on your device. It is kept on your device, so every photo after that starts right away.

Do I need an account?

No. You can cut out 10 photos a day without one. A free account, with Google, raises that to 30.

Which AI does it use?

Open-source models: BiRefNet and IS-Net, both under the MIT license, running in your browser with Transformers.js.
