How to remove the background from a photo for free

Step by step

  1. Open the site. Go to cutoutfree.com on a computer, phone or tablet. There is nothing to install.
  2. Choose a photo. Click Choose a photo, drag a picture onto the page, or paste one with Ctrl+V. JPG, PNG and WebP all work, including photos straight from a phone camera.
  3. Wait a few seconds. The background is removed on your own device. The very first time, your browser downloads the AI once (40 to 110 MB); after that every photo starts right away.
  4. Pick a background. Keep it transparent (the checkerboard), choose a color, or use another photo as the new background.
  5. Save it. Click Download for a PNG, or a JPG when there is a background. On iPhone and iPad, tap Save image, then “Save Image” to put it in Photos.

Do I need Photoshop?

No. Photoshop and similar editors can cut out a subject, but they need a paid subscription and some practice, because you trace the edges yourself. An AI background remover finds the subject for you, in seconds instead of minutes.

Tips for a clean cutout

  • Use a sharp, well-lit photo where the subject stands out from the background.
  • For hair, fur and fine details, choose Detailed on a computer.
  • Very large photos are scaled down to 4096 pixels on their longest side (2048 on phones), which is still plenty for printing and the web.
  • Need a transparent file for a design? Keep the checkerboard and save a PNG: JPG cannot be transparent.
